Linda Test

Could Linda take two weeks off?

Every office has someone who knows where everything is. We call her Linda. Yours might be Dave. It might be you. Five questions show what would get stuck while she’s away and what to fix first. No email needed to see your answer.

This isn’t a test of Linda. It’s a test of whether the office lets her leave. Meet Linda

This week. Pick the person who could cover. Block an hour for Linda to walk them through one real task while they do it.

Think of the person your office calls when nobody can find anything. Pick an answer, then Next. “Not sure” is a perfectly good answer.

When someone needs a file, who finds it?
If Linda were out tomorrow, could someone else log in to what she uses?
How many of the regular jobs can only Linda do?
Is there a backup who has practiced Linda’s work?
What happened the last time Linda was out?

How the test works.

Time off, not blame

Every office is lucky to have someone who knows where everything is. The trouble starts when the office can’t let her leave. Every gap this test finds is a job for the office, not a mark against Linda.

The first snag decides

The test reads your answers in a set order. Can someone else log in? Find the files? Step in? Do her regular jobs? If the honest answer to any of those is “only Linda”, she can’t take a sick day yet. If three or more answers are “Not sure”, the test says we can’t tell yet and lists what to find out. Next comes anything that would stall for more than a few days, then any other “Not sure”. Any of those means a long weekend. A backup who hasn’t practiced yet makes even a long weekend a maybe. A real vacation needs every answer in good shape, including a backup who has practiced.

What it can’t tell you

We haven’t seen your office or met your Linda. This is a starting point built from your own answers. If everything is in good shape, the test will say so, and you won’t need us.

The Linda Test, straight answers.

Who is Linda?

Linda is our made-up office manager. Her picture is AI-generated. She stands in for the person in your office who knows where everything is. Yours might have a different name. Meet Linda

Is this a test of my office manager?

No. It’s a test of the office around her. A person who knows everything is a gift. The goal is for that knowledge to live where the team can reach it, so she can take a real break.

What if I’m the Linda?

Then take it for yourself. Answer as if you were out tomorrow. The worksheet works the same way.

What happens to my answers?

They stay in this browser, when it allows saving, so you can come back to them. Clear my answers wipes them. Nothing from the test gets sent to us unless you email yourself the plan or ask us to get in touch. Read our privacy page

Who does the work if we want help?

Get It Together, Denver comes to your office. We sort the files, write the steps down with the person who does the work and help the backup practice. The decisions stay with you and your team.
